The land around Picher, Oklahoma contains millions of cubic yards of mine tailings (locally known as "chat"). Although processed to remove metals, the chat is composed of chert, dolomite, calcite, and residual oxides and sulfides of iron, zinc, manganese, lead, cadmium, and other metals.
This area of Picher, Oklahoma is covered with a layer of chat 10-15 feet deep. Notice the tracks in the chat, indicating that locals use the area for recreation. I'm not sure if they are aware how poisonous the material is.
